About Greater Manchester e-Government
Partnership (GMeP)
The partnership was formally established in January 2002. Partners
have worked hard over the last year examining the potential for joint
working and base-lining each organisations’ aspirations and areas for
contributing to the overall strategy within the priority outcome
themes. The production of the Joint Statement in October 2002 brought
the preliminary work package plan together and recently the Partnership
was awarded £1 million from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister
through the Local Government On-line funding initiative for the
delivery of specific projects. It is noted that GMeP received more
funding than any other of the 94 partnerships which were awarded
funding.
Who are the partner members of GMeP?
Partnership members include the 10 Metropolitan Authorities, the GM
Strategic Health Authority, the GM Centre for Voluntary Organisations,
GM Police, GMPTE, GM Fire and the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).
What are the GMeP Objectives?
- To seize the opportunity of collaborative working by: -
- Transforming
services by joining up local shared services between councils, and
between councils and other public, voluntary and private agencies.
- Renewing local democracy by making Greater Manchester councils more
open and accountable and allowing citizens the opportunity to engage
with political representatives and debate on local issues.
- Promoting sub-regional economic vitality by engaging businesses and promoting sub-regional employment for local citizens.
- Ensuring that GMeP takes advantage of the economies of scale
provided by the latest enabling technologies allowing convenient and
accessible delivery of services to citizens.
- Collaborative partnerships working to ensure all partners co-operate to meet ESD targets.
- Ensure sub-regional projects are aligned to and build on the work
done by National Projects/Pathfinders making it easier and cheaper to
accelerate the implementation of ESD.
- The Portal project is specifically aiming to:
- Support and facilitate delivery
of the Greater Manchester Strategy.
- Raise the profile of Greater Manchester and its image as a sub-region.
- Recognised as the “voice” of Greater Manchester and have the
ability to express its influence regionally, nationally and
internationally.
Alignment of GMeP with the Greater Manchenster Strategy
GMeP builds on the GM Strategy, focussing on the use of information
and communication technologies to deliver real outcomes across the
conurbation and address some of the issues which Greater Manchester
faces.
Development of the GreaterManchesterOnline Website
- The first version of the GreaterManchesterOnline website was
formally launched on the same day as the GM Strategy: the 20th June
2003. The site, at this point, mainly contained information on the GM
Strategy and the local authorities.
- Further development of the site is continuing behind the scenes. In
early 2004 several new services and an updated design will be made
available. In addition to the inward facing services, the public facing
services that are being developed will include:
- A single source of all the
jobs offered by GMeP partners in Greater Manchester.
- A facility for finding training courses and training organisations across Greater Manchester.
- A federated search engine that will allow users to search for services across all the GMeP partners.
- A directory of online communities in Greater Manchester.
- Information and services that online communities in Greater Manchester can use to enhance their websites.
- The website will be properly launched in March 2004.
