GREATER MANCHESTER CONURBATION

The Greater Manchester conurbation is situated in the North West of England with a population of over 2.5 million.  Geographically the area covers approximately 500 square miles.

The conurbation encompasses ten Local Authority areas, namely; Bolton MBC, Bury MBC, Manchester CC, Oldham MBC, Rochdale MBC, Salford CC, Stockport MBC, Tameside MBC, Trafford MBC and Wigan MBC.

GREATER MANCHESTER RESILIENCE

The Greater Manchester Resilience Forum is representative of the following agencies responsible for the emergency planning process across the conurbation:-

  1. The 10 local authorities of Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan.
  2. Greater Manchester Police.
  3. Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service.
  4. North West Ambulance Service.
  5. British Transport Police.
  6. National Health Service.
  7. Strategic Health Authority.
  8. Environment Agency.
  9. The Military.
  10. Government Office North West.

The forum is a strategic level multi-agency body for civil protection arrangements in Greater Manchester.

The overall purpose of the forum is to ensure there is an appropriate level of preparedness to deliver an effective multi-agency response to emergencies of different types and scales.

The forum is supprted in its work by a range of sub-groups dealing with specific aspects of civil protection arrangements.
